Streetscapes and shop facades change rapidly (witness the recent developments round Queensgate) so it is all the more valuable to have a snapshot in time. We have four of these display boards with about 25 photographs on each covering Queens Drive, Andrews Avenue, Laings Road, High Street (showing the old Odeon – who remembers that?) and Knights Road.
We hold a lot of photographs in the archives but mostly those generated in the course of council business so they tend to be of council buildings, employees and events, road construction, park maintenance and the like. However, these can often give more information than was intended. For example these photographs were taken by Whitcher Associates, Architects and Urban Designers probably for town planning purposes but they are also significant to the social history of Lower Hutt.
If you are looking for a photograph of your area its worth trying us and if we can’t help there are other institutions we can refer you to.
