We hold a large number of aerial photographs of the Hutt City area dating from 1939 to the late 1980s. Most have location key indexes making them very accessible.
The Aerial photograph featured dates from 1965. Most were commissioned by the local Council or Board and were used for development purposes, e.g. town planning, river management, and drainage.
The Lower Hutt City Council 1965 series is unusual in that is also covers part of the Petone Borough Council Area. This image is interesting because it shows the recreation ground and what is now Weltec (to the east) with one of the buildings still under construction.
Using Aerial photographs it is possible to trace how an area has changed - including use, e.g. agriculture, sea, residential, commercial, and structures, i.e. houses, industry.
Aerial photography is expensive and the smaller councils commissioned fewer 'fligh overs' and at latter dates, i.e. the earliest Eastbourne Aerial series is 1974. Contact HCC for actual fligh over dates.
