Learning & Development

Study support Hutt City Council offers reimbursement to attend courses, lectures or examinations related to your job. 
Internal Training Lots of job-specific training and skills-based training is available for staff.
Internal Career Development HCC has a policy of promoting people from within wherever possible. We try to create career path opportunities where we can.
Te Reo classes Staff wishing to learn the Maori language are invited to attended classes.

Physical wellness initiatives

Health checks support Annual general health checks subsidised by $50 towards cost of the health check
Physical Activity Support To encourage regular physical activity a subsidy of 50% or $200 (whichever is the lesser) of the membership fee of any club that fits SPARC definition of physical activity.
Sports team sponsorship Council sponsors teams and individuals entering sports events and requiring regular physical activity to prepare for it e.g. triathlons.
Free Pool Access Free access to any of Hutt City’s swimming pools for council employees.
Massage therapy An acupressurist is available in the administration building on Tuesdays.
Smoking cessation In order to assist smokers to give up smoking a subsidy to a maximum of 50% or $120 (whichever is lesser) for attendance at approved smoking cessation courses.
Influenza vaccinations Free flu vaccinations are made available each year, usually in April. Other vaccinations are available to employees as appropriate to their work.
Vision assessments Provide vision screening for employees in certain roles.
Workstation assessments Workstation assessments to ensure equipment are up to employees’ personal requirements in order to avoid OOS problems
Hearing assessment Available to staff where noise is a factor of the environment.
Council bike Street services have made available a bike for staff use during lunch hours.

Banking facilities ‘Mates rates’ on your personal banking with Westpac
Medical Insurance Discounted premiums for health insurance have been negotiated with Southern Cross.
Staff discounts We have negotiated various discounts available in the community for council staff members.
Retirement Seminars Council funded retirement planning seminars for staff and partners providing information on all areas of retirement.
Financial Planning Seminars Council funded financial planning seminars open to all staff who want to reduce debt and reach their financial goals.

Emotional wellness initiatives

Employee Assistance Programme A confidential service for employees requiring assistance with problems at work or at home.
Alternative work arrangements Hutt City Council staff members are able to work from an alternative work site in certain circumstances.
Preventing harassment HCC is committed to providing a workplace where all employees can work without harassment.
Defensive driving courses All staff driving Council owned vehicles must undertake both a Defensive Driving Course and a Driver Assessment renewed every five years.
Social Club From team sports throughout the year to Friday night get together’s our social club organises events for members.
School Holiday Programme Subsidy for staff’s children attending the school holiday programme and access to bookings prior to advertising to the public.
Kapa Haka group HCC has the only council kapa haka group in NZ and is always keen to see new members.
