The Petone Settlers Museum is pleased to welcome your students as part of the Ship & Chips excursion! We have developed programmes around the early settlers' arrival to Petone Beach in the 1840s and the significance of the Museum site, adding to the broader themes of the excursion.

Having arrived by boat themselves, junior students can simulate and learn about settlers' journeys and arrival in New Zealand through a life-size board game! Students will also interpret our wall murals representing the 1840s till today on the interior of the Memorial Hall - a popular and engaging activity for all age groups.

Petone Beach and the Museum building are steeped in history and symbolism. Older students will explore the history and significance of the Museum building in Petone and settler history, as well as interpreting the pictorial history represented in the Memorial Hall.

We can provide tasksheets and activities to use in the classroom following the visit if required, as well as tailoring the activities for specific groups and curriculum areas as requested.

Social Studies Strands incorporated in the programme include: Culture and Heritage L1-5; Place and Environment L1-5; Time, Continuity & Change, L1-5.

We look forward to hosting your groups as part of Ship & Chips!

Learning Programmes for 2009

We've doubled up!

TheNewDowse (TND) and Petone Settlers Museum (PSM) are teaming up to bring you school programmes at each museum, and some programmes which involve visits to both museums for a truly cross-curricular experience. These are our new 'Double-Up Programmes', combining exhibition exploration, workshops and industry visits at both the PSM and TND in the one programme, with one booking. Booking will be a breeze - you can call either museum and speak to Andy or Jen for bookings and information.

Programmes are FREE, with optional workshops and special programmes at a small charge per person.

A vote of confidence!

The Ministry of Education through the Learning Experiences Outside The Classroom Project (LEOTC) have made our school programme possible. Since 1994 the Dowse school programme has been supported by this worthy initiative and now PSM has also received the same support. We can ensure quality, curriculum linked, memorable visits.
