Black Creek

About the Project

This project reduces the risk of Black Creek in Wainuiomata from flooding and will improve Black Creek as an area for all to enjoy.

There have been several storms in recent years where Black Creek has overtopped its banks and flooded. This project responds to community concerns about flooding from Black Creek and is part of a wider programme to increase stormwater protection in Hutt City.

Stage one and two are completed
During stage one of this project the channel from the Main Road Bridge to the Parkway Drain was widened and the Bryan Heath Park pedestrian bridge was replaced to span the wider channel.

A small wetland area on the eastern side of the creek was constructed between the Main Road and Best Street bridges. This landscaping aims to make the area more pleasant for use by the local community.

During stage two we widened the main Black Creek channel between the Parkway Drain and the Nelson Crescent Bridge, the Parkway Drain as far as the Konini Drain and the Konini Drain up to Konini Street.

Stage three is currently under way and involves the replacement of the Best Street pedestrian bridge.  Find out more about stage three in our latest newsletter.
