Leighton Catchment
The Waiwhetu Stream is popular for its beautiful walkways and native bush. However, during periods of heavy rain sewer pipes in the area become overloaded and overflow into the stream.
We have to stop these overflows, which are putting the environment at risk. Recent decisions made under the Resource Management Act require Hutt City Council to make significant progress towards reducing the number of overflows into the Waiwhetu Stream over the next five years.
On 2 August 2005 Council adopted a policy for upgrading private drains in an area defined as the Leighton Avenue catchment. The catchment has been divided into three areas to carry out the initial testing and upgrade work. The work will take place over the next three years.
Council is sending letters to all homeowners whose drains have failed the test. Homeowners must contact Michael Ryan from Council's engineering consultants TCB on 478-0342 or by e-mail michael.ryan@tcb.co.nz to discuss the options for having their drains repaired. Alternatively they can return the form included with their Council letter to Council who will pass it on to TCB. Homeowners whose drains passed the test need take no further action.
Homeowners have the option of joining a Council managed programme or managing the work themselves. Councils contractor Perkinson Civil Ltd have commenced work. Area 2 testing commenced in September 2006. The upgrading will continue through 2007.
