Additional Information

(Photos & Plans Here): options for Headstones and Monuments vary according to the plot type. The sextons approval is required PRIOR to Headstones & Monuments being installed.

There are several types of plots available at Taita Lawn Cemetery.

Body burial plots include lawn and monumental areas.

  • Lawn style plots have a concrete headbeam for installation of a standard sized headstone. any decorations must be kept on the concrete headbeam so that the lawn area of the plot can be maintained by Cemetery staff.
  • Monumental plots allow for fancy headstones, monuments and garden-style decoration of the entire plot. A mowing edge level with the ground must be clear of decoration to allow access to the plot. Family members maintain the decorated plot.

Ashes plots are available for burying contained cremated remains. The plots include lawn and garden areas. There are several options for ash interments such as memorial area and a bush trail. The container needs to be weather proof.

Specific areas are set aside for Baby's Garden plots, Children's plots and memorial sites. Memorial sites do not contain remains (burial or cremation). Only plaques are installed on the headbeam.

The RSA sections of the Cemetery allow for burials and the interment of ashes containers. A special wall is provided for ashes interments. The criteria for allocation of plots is set by the Office of Veterans' Affairs, contact phone 0800-483-8372.

        Ash Scattering

Ashes scattering is not available in any part of Taita Cemetery. This includes garden areas, lawns and streams. This policy has primarily been set in response to requests from Tangata Whenua. A secondary consideration is the negative effect ashes have on soil conditions.

        Services Available:

Interments (burial of ashes containers or bodies) are generally co-ordinated by funeral directors and the Hutt City Council's contractor Downer EDI Works Ltd. The Cemetery operates on a user pays basis.

Special requirements need to be pre-arranged with Sexton funeral director prior to interment. Some special services may incur additional fees.

Interments are available outside standard burial hours, at extra cost.

        Target Response Times

        • Any enquiries or complaints responded to within 1 week.
