New Zealand has a wide range of early childhood services. Many are run by private operators, community church groups and voluntary agencies. They include kohanga reo and other language immersion groups. Kindergartens and crèches are generally run by trained early childhood educators and charge fees.
Play centres provide community based parent-run, free childcare. Parents need to attend with their children, and are usually involved in the running of the Playcentre. To find out more information about playcentres go to their website www.playcentre.org.nz
The Government provides up to 20 free hours of early childhood education and care per week for three and four year old children in New Zealand. This includes kindergartens, education services, care services and home based care networks. The hours can be split over two facilities and you can claim up to six hours per day. Additional hours are only charged at half the rate.
