Services currently provided by this division include registration and licensing of:

Advice on establishing a new food business and the associated legislative requirements, may be obtained during normal office hours by contacting the District Environmental Health Officer at the Hutt City Council

    Services include investigation of complaints on health nuisances such as:

      • noise
      • housing defects
      • odours
      • litter and pest control

      The division also carries out Council Bylaw enforcement.

      Main administration building, 30 Laings Road, Lower Hutt

      Hours Available

      For the Main Administration Building, Monday to Friday (except public hoildays) from 8.00am to 5.00pm.

      An after hours service is provided for noise control, pollution incidents and general health nuisance problems.

      Enviromental Health Fees 2008/2009

      Premises meeting the required standard by 1 July are eligible for a discount, provided re registration is applied for by 20 August.

      The qualifying conditions for obtaining an 'A Grade' Certificate of Hygiene are as follows:

      • Premises comply with the requirements of the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974.
      • A high standard of personal hygiene is maintained by all staff.
      • High standards of cleanliness and hygiene are maintained in the premises.
      • A high standard of food preparation, storage and service.
      • The Manager and at least one staff member to have undertaken a Food Safety training course.
      • Cleaning schedules and an environmental inspection system for cleaning and maintenance (ie: record keeping for refrigeration and hot holding units; records of service contracts).

      Auditing of Food Safety Programmes

      The Council has a Food Safety Auditor who is able to undertake audits of food safety programmes for approval by the NZ Food Safety Authority. Contact Inspections and Enforcements Division, telephone (04) 570-6666, for further details of fees and procedures.

      Target Response Times

      • Emergency, noise, and pollution problems are responded to within 1 hour.
      • Other requests for service are responded to within 5 days.
