In an emergency you will most likely need to remain at home. In this situation you will need to rely on your Household Emergency Survival Items.

Emergency water supplies - 3 litres of
drinking water per person per day
Emergency food supplies and can opener
Transistor radio & spare batteries
Torch & spare batteries & bulbs
First aid kit & first aid manual
Essential medications
Plastic bags - large & small
Toilet paper
Important documents
Spare clothing: waterproof jackets, strong shoes
Blankets or sleeping bags
Basic toiletries
Baby's supplies
Emergency pet supplies: food, water
You may want to store your Emergency Survival Kit in strong waterproof containers in an easily accessible, safe place, such as a hall cupboard. Discourage everyday use of items such as the radio and torch. Organise a regular timetable for testing and renewing the batteries.
You and your family will require enough food to last at least 72 hours after a major disaster. Although you are likely to have some food supplies anyway, it is still wise to ensure you have a separate "emergency supply". Simply have a separate store and record the date to indicate when it should be replaced or buy extra food when you can and rotate emergency stocks with your normal stocks. Store non perishable food and avoid foods that have to be cooked unless you have a portable cooker or barbecue.
