Emergency Water

An emergency such as a major earthquake will disrupt all water supplies for an extended period. Store water NOW as you will need it immediately after a disaster. Everyone requires about 3 litres of drinking water per day. You will also need water for cooking and washing and drinking water for pets. Aim to have enough water supplies to cover all these needs for up to 72 hours. Bracing your hot water cylinder and header tank will not only guard against damage but may also ensure you have a significant store of clean, usable water.

  • Save plastic soft drink bottles for storing emergency water.
  • Store chlorinated water in a cool, dark place for up to 2 years.
  • Store unchlorinated water in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year.
  • To extend storage life, store water bottles in the freezer.
  • Only Wainuiomata, Stokes Valley and Manor Park have chlorinated water.
  • Check the water by holding it to the light, treat if concerned about quality.
  • Treat by adding 3 drops of unscented bleach per litre - leave for 20 minutes.
  • Alternatively, use water purification tablets as per the instructions.
  • Strain any water with material in it and boil for 5 minutes.
  • Both hot water cylinders and header tanks contain drinkable water.
  • Water in toilet cisterns is safe if no chemical cleaner has been used.
  • Collect rain water and use for washing or cooking - boil before drinking.
  • Use swimming pool water for washing and sanitation, but not drinking!
  • Rivers and streams will be contaminated and only useful for firefighting!
