The transportation, use and storage of chemicals and dangerous goods presents a constant threat of a toxic incident. Throughout the region these products are moved by rail, sea or road, as well as being used and stored in bulk. In the last 20odd years, there have been several Civil Defence emergencies in New Zealand as a result of toxic leaks. Although safety standards are high, accidents are possible and such an incident may occur as a consequence of another emergency, such as earthquake or flooding.
Appropriate action will depend on the chemical involved.
Civil Defence sirens will be used to alert the community if necessary.
