Landslips are relatively common in many parts of New Zealand. Steep slopes are vulnerable to the effects of heavy rain, earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. The steepness of hills in the Hutt area, particularly Stokes Valley, Eastern Bays and Western Hills, make this event a high probability after very heavy rainfall or during an earthquake. On 20 December 1976, heavy rain caused numerous landslips in the district. The threat is ever present as witnessed during the heavy rains in 2004
