Public Information For Use During An Emergency

The main sources of information during an emergency are commercial radio stations and the Hutt City Council website.

The public are encouraged to tune in to a commercial radio station, and refer regularly to the Current Emergency Status web page for updates during an emergency. The Public Information Report will be updated as the emergency unfolds, covering as many of the following topics as are relevant.

  

 

 

Emergency	State of Civil Defence Emergency declared (if relevant) or the impending threat
General overview	Type of incident, severity, damage, injuries, fatalities
What to do	Remain at home/work, stay indoors, take shelter, move to higher place, tape over windows, have emergency survival kits nearby
What not to do	Don't drive anywhere, don't use phones, curfews
Precautions/safety	Take care with gas; beware of powerlines; - turn power, water; and gas off, and how. Check neighbours.
Schools	General info to schools and parents, keep children at school, pick children up, evacuations.
Access/areas to avoid	Areas to avoid, hazardous or contaminated areas, roads closed, bridges out, access in/out of LH, alternative routes
Evacuations	Required, routes, instructions, transportation, times
Services available	Hospitals, grocery stores, banks, pharmacies, etc
Welfare	Locations of centres, services at centres
First aid information	Basic first aid instruction, where to get assistance
Firefighting instructions	General information on fire safety, extinguishing fires
Information	Media hot-line number, public information phone number, information centre location, locating people, where to go to help/volunteer, provide resources, listen to radio, website address
Efforts underway	The govt and public response efforts, mass efforts, medical, search and rescue, emergency repairs, debris clearance, other events
What to expect	Aftershock, flooding to increase, river rising, weather report
Key points	Reiterate any key points - declaration, evacuations
