Siren Warning System
If the sirens sound, turn your radio on, tune to a local commercial station and follow the advice given.
The siren warning system is crucial to Hutt City Council's Emergency Management and Civil Defence operations in the event of an impending emergency. It comprises Civil Defence sirens, Fire Service sirens, and privately owned sirens located around the Hutt area to give maximum coverage. There are 24 sirens in total.
In the event of an actual or impending emergency the sirens would sound for a significant length of time. Mobile sirens belonging to Police, Fire Service and Civil Defence would also be used, motorists would also be asked to sound their horns, and people should check to see that neighbours are alerted.
When the sirens sound, it is important to tune into a local radio station. In the event of a major disaster, keep tuning until you find a station that is broadcasting. The Emergency Management Office will work with the radio stations to provide information to the public to keep them informed about what is happening, and what to do.
