Rodents - Hutt City Council Land

Any reports of rats or mice on Hutt City Council property, parks, reserves, beaches, drainage reserves will be forwarded to a registered pest control technician.

Rats & Mice - Private Property

To discourage or eliminate rats and mice from your property you need to:

Poison baits are the most effective form of rat control. Bait can be purchased from garden centres or hardware stores. Follow the instructions on the packet.

Traps work well for catching mice. Poison bait can also be used.

Click here for more information on Rodents.

Ants

Ants can be controlled by using insecticide sprays, dusts, baits and repellents. Spraying will kill the ants coming into contact with the insecticide. Baits are effective for controlling trail making ants. Baits should be placed near to the path of the ants and may take two to three weeks to be effective.
Click here for more information on ants.

Fleas

Note: An insect growth regulator mixed with an insecticide will kill the adult flea and larvae. Insecticide alone will only kill the adult flea.

Click here to view further information on fleas.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches live in cracks and crevices and where food and water is accessible. Control methods include insecticide sprays, gel baits and glue traps. Baits are extremely effective as cockroaches eat each others faeces and bodies.

Click here for further information on cockroaches.

Wasps

Wasp nests can be located on the ground in vegetation, in a dead tree or hedge or occasionally in the roof or under the floor of a house. Observe where the wasps are feeding and the flight path to locate the nest.

Take care not to disturb the wasps, sometimes there is more than one entrance. Apply Permethrin dust powder to the entrance at night killing the wasp within a few days. Dust powders can be purchased at garden centres or hardware stores

It is not recommended that kerosene or petrol be used for eradicating wasp nests due to the risk of fire or explosion hazards.

Reports of wasp nests on Council land will be destroyed by a pest control technician.

Bees

Bees are generally docile and will not harm you if left undisturbed. Bee swarms occur from late spring to early summer. The swarm cluster will usually settle on a tree branch, bush or another convenient site a short-distance from the hive until new a dry cavity is found as a nesting site.

Whilst temporarily clustering, do not attempt to hose or smoke or disturb them from their resting place.

Call a local beekeeper for advice and assistance in removing the bees.
Contact Alan Kilmister phone (04)565 1641, or Ivan Peterson phone (04) 526 9180. A fee may be charged for transport and collection costs.
