Pedestrian Crossings

Getting Across Lower Hutt

When using a pedestrian crossing allow enough time for vehicles to stop.  If vehicles are approaching please wait for them to pass or stop before you step out.

Refuge Islands are designed to give you a chance to get across in two stages, giving you a safe place to wait before crossing the second stage.

Raise courtesy platforms are used to indicate to drivers to be aware of pedestrians.  Be sure to acknowledge any driver who stops to let you cross.

Remember to check behind and in front for turning traffic when crossing at an intersection.

Median strips are not pedestrian crossings, use with care.  It is illegal to walk along a median strip.

If you are within 20 metres of a crossing facility, please use it - for your own safety.

Always make eye contact with the driver to make sure that they are going to stop before you step out.

Pedestrians - never assume drivers will stop for you!
