The four w's of worm composting

Worm composting is nature's way of recycling. It's easy to do, and because it reduces the amount of organic waste we send to our landfills, it's good for the environment.

What's more, worm farms make the best compost, packed full of nutrients to help your garden grow.
So help the planet and your garden - get a wriggle on and get worm composting.

WHAT is worm composting?

Worm composting is a natural recycling system using worms and organic waste materials. When you feed kitchen scraps and leftovers to special worms housed in a suitable container, the resulting compost material can be used as a nutrient-rich fertiliser for your garden. Properly maintained, worm composting is an odourless system that is easily maintained and kind on the planet.

WHY should I make worm compost?

Put simply, worm composting is great for the planet and great for the garden. Worm composting is an easy, cost effective, natural way of recycling organic kitchen waste. What's more, being a natural plant food and soil conditioner, worm compost provides an excellent highquality material, perfect for container growing and enriching the garden.

WHERE should I keep my worm compost?

Indoors, a basement, garage, utility room, kitchen or any spare space is suitable, as long as the temperature remains between 10-25°C.

Outdoors, bins can be kept in sheds, garages, on verandas, patios, porches, balconies or in the backyard. A sheltered spot that gets some sun is ideal, but be careful, as a bin in full sun may get too hot in summer. When the outside temperature drops below 10°C, bins should either be moved inside or kept well insulated.

WHO can produce worm compost?

Anyone can start a worm bin. It requires minimal space, effort and knowledge.
Kids, even you can grown your own worms - ask a grown-up to help you get started, or why not ask a teacher if you can start one in your classroom?

Worm composting can be undertaken all year round, both inside and out and provides people who have limited space with an effective means of recycling kitchen waste.

Using the Compost

Worm compost is nutrient rich and is an excellent material for using directly on container plants or combining with potting mix. It can also be used every time you plant-a handful mixed into the soil.
