Disposal of fluorescent light bulbs

Disposal of fluorescent light bulbs present a potentially significant environmental problem if disposed in landfill. Hutt City Council is supporting an initiative to see that they are 100% recycled.

Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes should not go into the rubbish, or the recycling. They contain mercury and other heavy metals, and should be disposed of properly. Mercury is highly toxic to the nervous system – especially for growing children’s brains.

With support from Hutt City Council and the co-operation of the following stores, Interwaste will recycle every component of these lights.

Please take your spent bulbs to any of the following stores for recycling:

The shops listed above would prefer that you purchase you new bulbs from them.  If you do not, then there might be a small charge.  Recycling costs just over $1 per bulb.
