Landfills
If you have a large item, or you're having a major clean-out, you may need to take rubbish to the landfill.
The Hutt City Council owns two landfills: Silverstream and Wainuiomata.
Both landfills are designed to minimise the environmental impact of disposal.
Landfill locations
Silverstream Landfill is located on Reynolds Bach Drive.
Wainuiomata Landfill is on Coast Road, 1.5km out of town.
Both are open every day except Christmas day, New Year's day and Good Friday.
Harnessing Landfill Gas
Silverstream Landfill has a state-of-the-art power station which extracts methane gas from the landfilled rubbish to generate electricity.
Using landfill gas in this way minimises the discharge of greenhouse gasses and harnesses energy that would otherwise be wasted.
Fact
The fee you pay to use the landfill covers the cost of running and looking after it.
