To be eligible to stand for election you need to be enrolled as a parliamentary elector and be a New Zealand Citizen. You need to have two registered electors to nominate you. These electors must reside within the boundaries of the local government area for which you wish to stand; ie ward, community, constituency.
There is a $200 deposit that needs to be made with each nomination. The deposit is refunded if the number of votes you receive is greater than 25% of the lowest successful candidate for that particular election.
Candidates have the opportunity of providing the electoral officer with a photograph and profile statement which is published in a booklet and sent out with the voting papers.
The Remuneration of elected members is as follows
