Today is an exciting day for Hutt City’s CBD as we celebrate the completion of the High Street upgrade.
The Council has invested $1.4 million into the upgrade, which includes the installation of high quality street furniture and granite pavers and the widening of the footpaths to create a pedestrian friendly environment.
The upgrade has transformed High Street into a more attractive shopping precinct which will encourage more visitors to the CBD.
It will enable cafes and restaurants to use open spaces in the street.
It will complement the upgrade of Margaret Street and create a vibrant new city centre that will bolster civic pride and confidence in the city.
The Christmas Carnival and parade will demonstrate the versatility of the street and show off what a great place the CBD can be for street events and market days.
The upgrade shows what can be achieved when we work together. I would like to thank retailers and the public for their patience during construction.
Thanks to the contractors who kept the project on time and on budget.
I would also like to thank CBD+ and the Hutt News for their support of the Christmas Carnival and parade.
Thank you all for being here and celebrating this important occasion for our city. We can all feel very proud of our new High Street.
All that is left for me to do is carry out my mayoral duty. Therefore, it gives me great pleasure to formally open the new High Street.
