Scribble + Sculpt: Art in Schools

Tomorrow 10:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.

Art and craft have been vital to our education system since the 1940s. The exhibition Scribble + Sculpt shares the story of pioneering teachers who led the way for educational reform and promoted creativity at the heart of learning.

Works by renowned potter Doreen Blumhardt and Northern Māori Project artists, including Sandy Adsett, John Bevan Ford, Ralph Hotere, Selwyn Muru, Marilyn Webb and Cliff Whiting, are brought together to highlight how essential this vision was for education in the twentieth century.

In a contemporary world with new media and technology, creative learning is even more important as a way to foster resilience, experimentation and innovation. To celebrate the vibrant work of Te Awakairangi Lower Hutt teachers and students, The Dowse education team are working with local schools, including the Rafael House Rudolf Steiner School and Waterloo School, to create new works during the exhibition.

Location

The Dowse Art Museum, Lower Hutt, Wellington Region
