Dos and don’ts for your dog
You can’t take your dog:
- to playgrounds (some children find them scary)
- onto the playing fields within our sports fields
- into Percy Scenic Reserve or Mitchell Park
You can take your dog:
- into most parks, reserves and bush reserves on a leash
- up to the perimeter of playing fields
There are seasonal restrictions on dog walking hours at some beaches. You’ll find these clearly signposted at the park or reserve.
Find a dedicated dog exercise area near you.
Barbecues and open fires
You can use gas barbecues in our parks and reserves. You can’t light an open fire anywhere in any of our parks or reserves.
We have a free electric barbecue available at Williams and Bishop parks.
Alcohol in our parks
Large areas of Lower Hutt are now alcohol free zones during the daytime. Check the maps in our Alcohol in public places bylaw (PDF 4.71MB) to see the rules on drinking in a specific park or garden.
If you're holding an event, please contact us to find out about catering for special events.
Many of our public spaces are smokefree, including all our parks, playgrounds and reserves. Please don't smoke in these areas.

Cars and motorbikes must stay on dedicated roads. They aren’t allowed on grassed areas, bush tracks or near fire breaks
