Drinking water standards compliance

Public Notice

Some plumbing fittings allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water if it has been standing in the fittings for several hours.  Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that you flush taps each morning before drinking water from them. Allow the tap to run long enough so that it could have filled a mug. This brief flow will be sufficient to remove any metals that might have accumulated from the plumbing fittings. This advice applies to all households, on either public or private water supplies.

For further information about the health implications of this advice, contact the Drinking Water Assessment Unit of the Wellington Regoional Public Health Service, phone 04 570-9002.
