Hutt City Council

Council digging in for community tree planting event

Friday, June 05, 2009

Hutt City Council is hosting a community tree planting day tomorrow (5 June) to coincide with World Environment Day and Arbor Day.

The council named 2009 the year of the tree in the northern ward so the new trees are set to line streets in Stokes Valley, Taita and Pomare.

Main streets and corners with few trees will be targeted for planting.

With gumboots on and spades in hand councillors and council staff will join local school children and volunteers to mass plant more than 300 trees.

Mayor David Ogden will also dig in to show his support for the community event and representatives from GHD Engineering Consultants, Contact Energy, Downer EDI Works and Capacity have all agreed to help out

School children who take part will have the opportunity to adopt a tree and be encouraged to keep it healthy and looking good.

The day kicks off at 10am on Summit Road with a safety training session before participants are allocated planting sites.

Mayor Ogden will be at the Wingate roundabout from about 11.15am.
