Avalon Cycle Park Launch
Saturday the 31st of May marked the official launch of Wellington’s newest cycling facility, one that is aimed at providing a safe place for young children and novice riders to practice their skills before heading ‘on-road’. Fulton Hogan has designed the facility to represent a real road environment with a variety of intersections and road surfaces. This was a joint venture managed by Hutt City Council with Fulton Hogan contributing to the cost of the facility. While this is the third such facility that Fulton Hogan have designed and installed this is the only one of its type in the Wellington region (the other two being in Invercargill and Dunedin).
The track is located in an open grass area by the stage in Avalon Park it has over 450 meters of pathway (both smooth asphalt and the rougher chip seal) various intersections, two roundabouts, three speed bumps and railway crossing and a pinch point. The official launch encouraged families and their bikes to come along to the Avalon Cycle Park, where Hutt City Mayor, David Ogden conducted the official opening and gave out spot prizes. Avanti Bikes provided free cycle safety checks on the day and Hutt Valley DHB HEHA (Healthy Eating – Healthy Action) Programme supported the HCC initiative for the Avalon Cycle Park by providing through its Fruit Sponsorship programme, free fruit (supplied locally by Jina’s) to be distributed on the day.
