“Belt-Up” clinic kept busy

The free child restraints ‘clinic’ was held at Taita OutReach church car park on Saturday the 30th of August from 10am to 2pm. The safety checks were jointly run by Plunket, ACC and Hutt City Council using Safe2Go technicians who are trained in all aspects of child restraints.
Road Safety Coordinator, Anna Blomquist says the day was a success with over fifty vehicles being checked for correctly installed child restraints. Of those checked 21 were loosely installed and 20 were loosely harnessed. “It’s wonderful to see our community being proactive about road safety.”
“Our mechanic Dion Perroit of “Belt-Up” was kept busy installing anchor bolts in cars all day and we even had people lining up at 9:45am to get it done. This is the first time we have done an event like this and we could not have done so without the support of OutReach church, Baby on the Move, Dimac Bins, Kokiri Marae and our local fire service.” she says.
Anna hopes to repeat this education initiative in the future, however the short term follow-up will be a cooperative enforcement campaign involving Lower Hutt Police.
