Road safety – child restraints

Friday, September 18, 2009

Hutt City Council, Lower Hutt Police and Plunket are doing a series of checkpoints over the next two weeks focusing on child restraints.

The first was held on Thursday 17 September in Taita. Of the 41 vehicles checked only two were completely correct, the main problems being tether straps not being used and harnesses being too loose.

“Some of the time it’s simply education” explains Road Safety Coordinator Anna Blomquist “Many people are unsure about tether strap and anchor bolts, particularly if the car seat was given to them by a friend or family member or bought off Trade Me.”

Anna recommends asking the retailer about tether straps or talking to your local mechanic.

“They’ll know where it can be installed.  Some cars come with anchor points as well so it’s something you can do yourself.”

The harnesses on child seats need adjustment from time to time. Getting kids in and out of seats with bulky winter clothing means they can become loose - ideally you should only be able to fit one fingers’ width of space between the child and the harness.
