ON THE RIGHT TRACK: He might be only 3½, but James Tomlinson was learning some valuable road safety lessons during the holiday break – and having fun at the same time.
Pictured is James and his mother, Sarah (looking on), who are among the many families who have made use of the new purpose-built Fulton Hogan Cycle Park at Avalon Park during the past few weeks.
The cycle park has all the road markings of a conventional road, although a little smaller, and has been designed to match normal road conditions – without the danger of vehicle traffic.
Hutt City Council Road Safety Co-ordinator Anna Blomquist says it even has smooth tar-sealed surfaces and chip-seal surfaces, and the bonus of railway crossings where the Lions Club of Lower Hutt model train disects the cycle track. “It’s a terrific place where kids can learn how to ride their bikes in a safe environment,” Anna says. “The cycle park is a great addition to the other play equipment and picnic facilities at Avalon Park.”
The project to build the track was managed and paid for by Hutt City Council as part of the recent upgrade of Avalon Park. Contractor Fulton Hogan assisted with reduced labour and material costs.
