Keep Active this Winter with Lively Places

Thursday, July 09, 2009

Hutt residents have a great range of opportunities to get moving and have fun by keeping fit this winter thanks to the new Lively Places programme.

With 22 different activities taking place in local community venues around the Valley between 20 July and the end of September, there's something for everyone. The programme caters for all fitness levels and ages, with low impact activities through to turbo-charged touch.  The classes are low cost and the emphasis is on fun and participation.

There are lots of opportunities to try something new, from qi gong and handball to latin dance and turbo touch,  Other activities on offer include pilates, tai chi, dancing, yoga, mums and babies classes,  self defence, and low impact aerobics.

Lively Places has been developed by Leisure Active (Hutt City Council) and Activation (Upper Hutt City Council) to help Hutt Valley residents increase their physical activity during the colder winter months.  It follows on from the successful Lively Parks series run over summer 2008/09.

Recent research from Sport and Recreation New Zealand indicates that only 47.6% of adults in the Wellington region achieved the National Physical Activity Guidelines of 30 minutes of moderate intensity of physical activity on at least five out of seven days.

Getting involved in the Lively Places programme is easy.  Participants can join the programme at any time and it’s no big deal if you miss a class.  Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and footwear and bring a towel and water bottle.

Further information on the programme can be found in the new Lively Places brochure which will be available shortly from Council facilities around the Hutt Valley or by visiting www.leisureactive.co.nz
