Promoting Māori language in the community

Hutt City Council is celebrating Māori Language Week with a series of free events promoting te reo i te hapori – Māori language in the community.
Running from Monday 27 to Friday 31 July, the festivities include performances from the council’s own kapa haka group, kapa haka school groups, storytelling and te reo Māori classes.
“This year’s theme is Māori language in the community so we’ve organised free events at our libraries and TheNewDowse for the public to enjoy,” says Hutt City Council chief executive Tony Stallinger.
“Māori Language Week is a great time to learn te reo, even if it’s just a few words, and we hope people will be inspired to me mahi koe – have a go.”
Kapa haka performances
- Monday 27 July, 12pm, St Peter and Paul’s kapa haka, TheNewDowse
- Wednesday 29, 12pm, Wainuiomata High School kapa haka, War Memorial Library
- Thursday 30 July, 1pm, Hutt City Council kapa haha roopu, War Memorial Library
- Friday 31 July, 1pm, Hutt City Council kapa haka roopu, War Memorial Library
Storytelling
- 10am all week at TheNewDowse. Stories are in English, but you'll learn a little te reo along the way.
Te reo Māori language classes
- Join in with a beginner language class on Tuesday 28 July, 12pm and 1pm at the War Memorial Library.
