Outfall pipeline update

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

“Repairs of the leaking joints identified in the main outfall pipeline were completed last week and the pipeline was put back into operation," says City Infrastructure General Manager Bruce Sherlock.

“While the pipeline was being returned to full capacity, a further leaking joint was discovered and the pipeline is being drained at the discharge points to allow the leak to be repaired.

“Signs will be in place at the discharge points for 48 hours after any discharge. As a safeguard the public are advised not to swim or collect shellfish within the vicinity of the discharge points while signs are in place.

“While the pipeline is shut down, treated wastewater is being discharged into the Waiwhetu Stream through the overflow outlet near the Hutt River mouth.

“The joint will be repaired using internal seals to minimise disruption to the public.”
