Outfall pipeline inspection complete

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Council contractors have now completed a walkthrough inspection of the 18km main outfall pipeline to identify any pipe or joint defects.  The walkthrough has confirmed that the pipe is in good condition and that there are no structural issues.

The crack found two weeks ago in a short length of the pipe at Rimu St, Eastbourne was the result of damage caused by nearby trees rather than any structural issues.  The area of pipe has been excavated and repairs are nearly complete.

Increased ventilation allowed the pipeline to dry out before the walkthrough.  This made it easier for contractors to identify any weeping or dampness that would indicate a potential fault.  A number of joint defects have been identified and are now being sealed using internal seals.

Once this work is complete, the pipeline will be returned to operation.
