Parkers taking church spaces

Inconsiderate parkers are causing a headache on Sundays for St James Church behind the War Memorial Library.

The church has for many years allowed users of the library and the adjacent Little Theatre to park for six days of the week on its land. However, St James’ People’s Warden Murray Wills says problems have increased recently, despite signs that indicate car parking is reserved for church-goers only until 1pm on Sundays.

“In some cases recently, parishioners have pointed out to people that they are parking illegally directly under the signs, only to receive abuse,” Mr Wills says. “We want to be able to allow the public to continue using the car parks during the week, but I think it’s only fair that people respect our right to use them on a Sunday.”

Judy Robb of Hutt City Council says people should take note of the signs it has erected. “We have a very good relationship with the church and we would not want to see the car parks removed or inconsiderate people having their cars towed away.

If you are not going to church, then enjoy the sleep-in until after 1pm!”
