“Further investigations have determined that the latest leak identified in the main outfall pipeline is the result of a crack in a short length of the pipe," City Infrastructure General Manager Bruce Sherlock announced today.
“The cracked pipe will need to be excavated to complete the repair and we may need to replace a length of the pipe. We expect the work to take up to four weeks.
“The other recent pipe problems have related to failed joints and have largely been repaired using internal seals.
“While the repair is underway, we will carry out a full ‘walk through’ inspection of the 18 km pipe to look for any other potential pipe or joint defects. Any potential defects will be pressure tested and repaired if necessary before the pipeline is returned to operation.”
