City Infrastructure General Manager Bruce Sherlock says work is underway to repair a leaking joint in the main outfall pipeline south of Burdan’s Gate.
“We’ll be using the new joint seal technique that allows us to complete the internal repair within a few hours. The pipeline will be partially drained through scour points south of Burdan’s Gate to allow us to enter the pipe to carry out the repair.
“The main pumping station will be shut down for a short time. During this time, treated wastewater will be discharged into the Waiwhetu Stream through the overflow outlet near the Hutt River mouth.
“The wastewater is fully treated and UV disinfected but, as a safeguard, signs will be in place advising the public not to swim or collect shellfish in the vicinity of the discharge points.
“We expect to begin refilling the pipeline by Friday morning.”
