Hutt City Council

Safety survey results released

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

A majority of residents agree Hutt City is a safe place to live, according to survey results released this week.

The Hutt City Council’s perceptions of safety phone survey found 83% of the 550 respondents agree Hutt City is a safe place to live.

“This was our first in-depth perceptions of safety survey and it’s given us a better understanding of how safe people feel in the city, particularly in public areas,” says council’s safe city officer Adrian Peoples.

Respondents were asked how safe they feel in different areas of the city and questioned about their knowledge of crime prevention initiatives, policing, whether they’ve been a victim of crime and their general feeling of safety.

“We’re committed to creating a safe city for all residents and the survey has confirmed the majority of residents feel safe. It has also highlighted areas where we need to focus our attention.

“Since the survey was conducted we have upgraded the Naenae Station and subway to increase safety and throughout the city we continue to support Walkwise foot patrols, youth-at-risk programmes, liquor bans, better urban design and anti-graffiti measures.

“The survey results will certainly help direct the work of council as we come together with police and other agencies to maintain and improve safety in our city.”

Other significant findings include:

The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 4%.
