The judges were looking for the “wow” factor and an iconic kiwi costume provided it at Hutt Valley’s own school wearable arts awards last night.
Ricky the Rainforest Kiwi, designed and modelled by Wainuiomata High School’s Cameron Adam, won the Absolutely Aotearoa section and went on to win the supreme award in the Wearable Arts in Valley Schools (WAIVS) annual competition at the Little Theatre.
“It had the ‘wow’ factor,” said judge Deborah Davey. “It was very well constructed and Cameron stayed in character while on stage.”
His design was made out of chicken wire and feed bags that will be used to reforest a bird corridor in the Belmont Regional Park.
“The attention to detail won me over,” said another judge, Helen Rickaby. “There were lots of different perspectives to the costume.”
The category winners will be on display at TheNewDowse from Saturday 26 September until Sunday 11 October.
The Wearable Arts in Valley Schools is an opportunity for young people to take the lead and run a show for all local schools. Hutt City Council helps coordinate this annual event alongside schools and sponsors: The Body Shop, Booker-Spalding and The Dominion Post.
