Funding a sweet treat for Sugarcraft organisers

Monday, July 07, 2008

LAST weekend’s Sugarcraft exhibition at TheNewDowse was one of the tangible examples of how the Creative Communities Fund promotes arts and culture in Hutt City.

The exhibition organisers – the Wellington Cake Decorators Guild – received $1500 from the latest round of funding, which is  administered for Creative New Zealand by Hutt City Council. The funds paid for exhibition space at the Dowse and travel expenses for the judges.

“We had to fly in properly qualified judges from places like Christchurch, Auckland, Tauranga and Napier,” guild treasurer Glenys Kane said.

The exhibition has been running for 16 years, but this year’s funding has allowed it to be held at the Dowse, where publicity has been more extensive and more visitors were expected.

Creative New Zealand allocates about $63,000 a year for Hutt City Council to administer. Arts or cultural projects must:

  • increase participation in the arts at a local level, or increase the range and diversity of the arts available to Hutt City communities;
  • take place within Hutt City, and/or produce benefits that are largely experienced within the city;
  • benefit local communities; and
  • not have already been funded by Creative New Zealand for the same purpose.

Grants are made done in two rounds, usually March and September. This year’s March round, allocated by the Community Grants Committee, included the Sugarcraft exhibition and:

  • Hutt Valley Irish Society $3500,
  • Wainuiomata Choir $1000,
