Animal control officers will soon be visiting homes in the city to check for unregistered dogs as part of their continued efforts to ensure responsible dog ownership and public safety.
More than 1200 dogs registered last year haven’t been re-registered this year and officers will be calling on their owners.
"It’s possible people are struggling financially and they've let their dog registration lapse, we encourage them to contact us as we're happy to talk about options," says animal services manager Les Dalton.
"People may also no longer own the dog, the dog has died or they’ve changed address within the past 12 months. If this is the case, please get in touch.”
All animal control officers carry photo identification and they’ll be recognisable by their uniform and their Hutt City Council marked vehicles.
All dogs over the age of three months must be registered and the fine for keeping an unregistered dog can be up to $300.
Hutt City Council has incentives to encourage responsible dog ownership with lower registration fees for de-sexed animal and owners who met responsible owner criteria such as keeping a current vaccination record for their dog.
