The collaboration of several students created a winning design for Wa Ora Montessori School as their Tuatara costume won the Supreme Award at the finals of the 2008 Wearable Arts in Valley Schools (WAIVS) competition at Lower Hutt’s Town Hall last night.

The Tuatara was the stand-out costume for judges Deborah Hislop, a Hutt City Councillor, and Andy Glanville, the Learning Programmes Manager at TheNewDowse.
“It was not an easy choice, because every one of the outfits showed that a lot of effort had gone into them,” Cr Hislop said. “However, the Tuatara was the stand-out for us.”
The competition ran over three nights, with primary school designs on show on Monday night, intermediate and secondary schools on Tuesday, and finalists on Wednesday night.
The judges were able to see the costumes close-up before the show, which the audience was not able to on the catwalk.
“We saw a lot of teamwork,” Mr Glanville said. “It was clear that the kids had worked together on some outfits, which is what the competition is all about.”
