New system aims for better food safety
OPERATORS of cafés, takeaway premises and restaurants in Hutt City can now update their food safety systems with a new food control plan developed especially for their businesses.
The plan, initiated by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority, provides a structured approach to managing food safety. It has information sheets that detail best practice for all steps in the food service process, including food preparation, storage, display, cleaning etc.
A new Food Bill is being written and when it’s introduced, food control plans will be required for most food businesses. In the meantime, the plan is being offered through Hutt City Council on a voluntary basis for food service operations such as cafés, takeaways and restaurants.
Hutt City Council’s Team Leader of Environmental Inspections, John Pepper, says the plan’s early roll-out is a good opportunity for operators to get a head start on future requirements.
“We expect that the most pro-active operators in Hutt City will be keen to implement the new system,” John says. “Although it means a greater commitment for some businesses, the best ones are already doing most of what’s required.
“If New Zealand is to see a decrease in its high levels of food-borne illness, food business operators need to take responsibility for their part in that trend. This plan provides a system to help them do just that.”
The food control plan has been tested in restaurants and cafés of varying sizes throughout the country during the past two years. These operators generally welcomed the benefits it gave them, including the confidence to know they were doing the best they could to manage their premises and processes, and provide their customers with the safest possible products.
