Safe City

The Safe City work of Hutt City Council is a series of co-ordinated projects that work to prevent crime and make a healthier city. Including planning and urban design, economic development, utility and asset management, events and community development.

Safer public places action plan  

As part of the Safe City Work, a safer public places action plan (2007-12) has been developed by council in agreement with the Ministry of Justice’s Crime Prevention Unit and through a wide ranging consultation with partner agencies and council staff.

The safer public places action plan is administered by the Community Development officer.

WalkwiseWalkwise 

What is it?

An initiative that uses foot patrols by ADT Walkwise in the city’s CBD and in Petone.  

What they do

Patrolling hours

Walkwise officers patrol streets on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights – from 4pm to 4am in the CBD, and from 7pm to 2am in Petone.

Who operates Walkwise

ADT Armourguard operates the Walkwise patrols on contract to Hutt City Council.

Safe City strategy

What is it?

Working group made up of representatives from Police, Hutt City Council, Upper Hutt City Council, ACC, Regional Public Heath and the District Health Board.  

Aims

This group was formed late in 2008 and will be pursuing Hutt Valley Accreditation as a Safe Community from the World Health Association.

CCTV (Closed Circuit Television)

What is it?

Hutt City Council has installed 12 cameras in the CBD (Central Business District).These are operated by Lower Hutt Police and maintained by Hutt City Council. Council operates under CCTV Acquisition guidelines which assess any request of new cameras.

Community patrols New ZealandCommunity patrols

What is it?

A community patrol is a voluntary group of people that give their time to help the Police make their community safer. Patrols are supported by Council by loan of cars and financial support.  

Locations

There are currently community patrols operating in Wainuiomata, Naenae, Taita and Stokes Valley.

Carpark+ safer parkingCar park - safer parking pilot 

As part of a Ministry of Justice initiative Hutt City Council have been invited to be part of a group to create a system to work with owners/managers of car parking spaces and buildings to create safer parking environments.   

Crime prevention through environmental design

What is it?

Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) is based upon the principle that the environment can affect both the level of crime and the fear of crime in an area. Good design can minimize the risk of crime in an area.

Our support 

Hutt City Council supports positive CPTED input to new development as well as positive CPTED changes to existing public places.

Neighbourhood SupportNeighbourhood support

What is it?

Neighbourhood support aims to make homes and street safer by the creation of neighbourhood support groups through out the city.

Our support

Hutt City Council supports neighbourhood support by funding the co-ordinator – Ross McKinnon.

Alcohol management 

Part of the Safer Public places activities is the management of the public consumption of alcohol. This is a combined approach involving a team from across council and Police, Regional Public Health, ACC, Upper Hutt City Council, ALAC, Fire Service and the Hospitality Association.

Activities include the creation and policing on liquor ban areas, event management, enforcement and licensing issues, alcohol accords and education activities
