Petone is a mix of heritage and business and is the gateway to Lower Hutt. Petone Foreshore was the first landing point for settlers in the Wellington region. The foreshore is now the southern border of a vibrant waterfront area encompassing multi-national companies, fine food importers and boutique retailers.
Petone offers a unique mix of manufacturing, warehousing and office premises. Large-scale outlets sit alongside boutique retailers in a thriving retail strip on historic Jackson Street. The central pedestrian zone is popular with shoppers, specialty food lovers and cafe-goers.
This close-knit blend of big and small, old and new creates a commercial destination that is continually attracting new businesses. It’s also a popular neighbourhood for local residents and tourists.

What makes Petone an ideal location
"Petone is a great place to work from. We have all the functionality and accessibility we need here. We’re a short walk from all the cafés and shops of Jackson Street and from Lower Hutt. There is plenty of parking, our Wellington clients can get to us quickly and it’s a lot more affordable across the board," says Wayne Stemp, chief executive of smartcard makers EYEDE.
Petone’s western end is an easy destination for shoppers and workers – with good bus and train options, it is also close to both State Highway 1 and State Highway 2. The area already contains a mix of industrial, retail, commercial, and residential activity within a relatively small footprint.
Many of the commercial sites are quite large and industrial activity is moving to Seaview Gracefield. A small number of larger vacant sections are becoming available that are well suited to commercial, apartment, terraced housing, or mixed use developments.
Developing infrastructure includes a new motorway interchange and a Wi-Fi "river" down Jackson St. The changing face of Petone reflects our vision to enhance the scope of business and lifestyle and preserve the area’s heritage.
