The extensive "Petone Heritage Trail" can be walked in around three hours. Commencing at the Petone Railway Station (Hutt Road) the trail passes nearly 50 landmarks predominantly along Jackson Street and the surrounding area. An excellent booklet is available from Hutt City Visitor Information Centre at 25 Laings Road, central Lower Hutt, highlighting their significance. Main features of the trail include:
Two other "Discovery Trails" document heritage sites of both Wainuiomata and Eastbourne. Both brochures also outline the historical stories of the townships.
The New Zealand Historic Places Trust publishes a brochure "Historic Hutt Valley" depicting 28 sites of historic importance throughout Hutt City and Upper Hutt. Like the two discovery trails above, this route is best taken by car, and the brochures for all are available from the Hutt City Visitor Centre at 25 Laings Road, central Lower Hutt.
