Council’s Smokefree Outdoor Public Places Policy (PDF 296.1 KB) covers a range of public places. These areas include: parks, playgrounds, sports grounds, outdoor swimming pools, bus shelters, train stations, beaches, and the areas outside Council buildings and facilities.
The Policy also states that all Hutt City Council events are smokefree. Events with Council support or funding are strongly encouraged to be smokefree too.
Smokefree parks and playgrounds
We know that children ‘do as they see’ and we want to make smoking less normal by making it less visible to our children.
We want to keep our sportsgrounds and our sporting side-lines smokefree.
Smokefree train stations and bus shelters
We have partnered with Greater Wellington Regional Council so we can offer smokefree train stations and bus shelters in our community.
Smokefree events are an important step towards reducing the impact of smoking on our community. Children copy what they see. Exposing children to smoking behaviour makes it more normal for them, and increases the chance they will smoke in the future.
Events that are 100% smokefree make smoking less normal and support people who are trying to quit, to stay smokefree.
Smokefree Lower Hutt Event Toolkit
We've developed a Smokefree Lower Hutt Event Toolkit (PDF 1.6 MB).
This toolkit is aimed at members of the community who are holding events in our spaces and places, and provides advice and resources on making the event smokefree.
The toolkit includes information on:
- Why smokefree events are important
- Communicating the smokefree message
- Signage and resources available to use.
