If you do not start work within this time the consent lapses and is of no effect. If you subsequently want to undertake the work, you will need to apply for a new consent.
If you’re likely to need an extension, you can make a formal application using the Application for extension of time for Building Consents form (0.5 hours processing and admin is charged to the building consent).
We have the discretion to grant an extension of time or not after we review the building consent file. The decision will depend on whether there have been any changes to the Building Code.
You must complete your building work within two years of the consent being granted. If you anticipate that you'll need more time to complete the building, you can use the Application for extension of time for Building Consents form.
If you have not applied for a Code Compliance Certificate within two years of the consent being granted, we are required at that time to make a decision whether to issue a Code Compliance Certificate.
Please get in touch – we can talk through the reasons and advise you on the extension application process.
