When is parking free?
Public parking outside our CBD is generally free. Make sure you're following the road rules and that you're legally parked.
There is no residents’ parking scheme in Lower Hutt.
There are a small number of 15- and 60-minute parking spaces (P15, P60) provided free of charge throughout the metered areas in the CBD. If you’re lucky enough to secure a free park, make sure you don’t exceed the allocated time so you don’t get a ticket.
Parking in Petone? Look around the areas adjoining Jackson Street, and you'll find quite a few free parking spaces suitable for shoppers. Right now we don't have metered parking in the Petone shopping district.
Late night car parking
If you're parking in the CBD after 5pm, you probably won't need to pay for your park. Check the Pay and Display machines nearby - they list the hours when we enforce parking limits and have charges in place.
Parking your car in the weekend
On Saturday, parking is free within the CBD, although 120 minute (P120) time limits apply to the red premium zone and green shoppers’ zone.
On Sunday, parking is free and there are no time limits.
Where do we have parking meters?
We run pay and display metered parking in the Lower Hutt Central Business District (CBD). These areas are clearly signposted.
The metered area includes Market Grove (at the southern end of the CBD) to Downer Street (at the northern end), bounded by Cornwall Street and the Riverbank car park.
Check out more information on the different metered parking zones under How do I pay?
Find bike lockers
Greater Wellington provides cycle lockers at a number of railway stations. In some cases, a nominal charge may apply and there may be a waiting list.
Metlink's website has information about which railway stations have bike lockers, and how you can book them. Waterloo, Petone and Melling stations have long-term lockers, which you can book through Metlink for a fee.
For more information about bike lockers around the region, contact the Greater Wellington Regional Council:
