An 18 year old refugee from Sudan and an active member of Naenae Clubhouse, Clench’s passion for creativity has led to her being a volunteer, the winner of multiple competitions, the Eastern Ward representative of the Hutt City Youth Council and the recipient of the Sir Robert Jones scholarship.
Naenae Computer Clubhouse Coordinator, Lily Chalmers, says “Clench has been with us since 2010, when Naenae Clubhouse opened. She has worked hard in many creative areas and shows fantastic leadership skills. She is very deserving of this scholarship.”
The scholarship assists young women from refugee backgrounds to complete a university degree or tertiary qualification. It presents an opportunity for those who may not have the opportunity to study because of their family circumstances as refugees.
The Sir Robert Jones Scholarship is gifted in conjunction with Sir Robert Jones Holdings and Refugees and Survivors New Zealand. Around 80 applications were received and 15 refugee women received them. The scholarship pays tertiary fees and for two years of accommodation if the student attends an institution outside their home town.
Clench is looking forward to studying Design at Massey University, “I’m so thankful for the scholarship. I can’t wait to get hands-on experience in studios and workshops and apply design principles in real life.”
